The Transbank Monopoly

For decades, acquiring in Chile was dominated by a single entity: Transbank. Owned by the major Chilean banks, Transbank ran the ubiquitous Webpay Plus system. Most consumers still conceptually equate "checking out online" with "being redirected to Webpay."

While the Chilean government has begun enforcing a transition to a "four-party model" to encourage competition (bringing in newer acquirers like Klap and Getnet), legacy Webpay integrations still dominate the volume and consumer trust metrics. Attempting cross-border acquiring into Chile is notoriously difficult; connecting via a local Chilean acquiring partner is mandatory for high authorization rates.

Cuotas (Credit Installments)

Like the rest of Latin America, Chile operates heavily on credit installments called Cuotas. Offering up to 12 interest-free installments is standard. Importantly, many Chilean debit cards function simultaneously as "debit" and "credit" cards (CuentaRUT), expanding the addressable market for installment-based purchases tremendously.

Servipag and Cash Reliance

Servipag is the Chilean equivalent to Mexico's OXXO or Brazil's Boleto. It processes massive consumer volumes not just in physical cash locations, but also as a digital banking gateway. A consumer selects Servipag, gets a voucher ID, and can pay it either at a physical corner store or instantly via their own online bank's bill-pay feature.

The Rise of Open Finance

The passing of Chile's Fintech Law (Ley Fintech) is driving a surge in Account-to-Account (A2A) payments, championed by API startups like Fintoc. These "Pay by Bank" rails are rapidly stealing market share from legacy Webpay operations by offering merchants instantaneous settlement at a fraction of the traditional MDR costs.
